The Windows app is a beta for 64-bit Windows (x64). It works offline and keeps your notes as ordinary Markdown files in a folder on your PC. These pages describe version 0.6.3.

Download and install

Open the download page

Go to kithnote.app/download and choose Download Kithnote for Windows. Next to it is a SHA-256 checksum link if you want to verify the file. The checksum shows the file arrived undamaged; it comes from the same site, so it doesn't prove who made the file.

Run the installer

Run Kithnote-0.6.3-Setup.exe. It installs for your Windows account only, with no administrator rights, and adds Kithnote shortcuts to the Start menu and desktop. If Kithnote is already running, close it first.

Start Kithnote

Launch it from the Start menu.

Earlier betas came as a portable file (Kithnote-<version>-Windows.exe) that runs without installing. Portable copies still get signed updates. To move to the installed app, keep a backup, close Kithnote, then run the installer.

Updates

Kithnote checks for signed updates 30 seconds after it starts and then every 6 hours. It never downloads or installs anything on its own. Open Settings and find Desktop updates:

  • Check for updates looks now.
  • Download (followed by the version number) fetches the new version, with progress shown.
  • Restart and install installs it. Choose Install on next launch instead to wait, and Cancel install on next launch to change your mind.

The section says "Updates are verified before installation. Your notebook stays on this device." Before installing, Kithnote saves your notebook ("Saving your notebook and restarting to update…"). If an update step fails you'll see "Could not finish that update action. Your notes are kept."

When an update is available, a button also appears in the title bar and a notice in the sidebar. While it installs, an Updating Kithnote window shows progress. If the new version doesn't start, the previous one is restored.

Where your notes are

New installs save your notebook in Documents\Kith Notes. If you used the app when it was called Euphoric Notes, your notebook stays in Documents\Euphoric Notes.

Inside the folder:

  • each note is a .md file in a folder named after the note's Kithnote folder, so you can open it in other apps;
  • a .euphoric folder holds Kithnote's own data, including the notebook index, trashed notes (.euphoric\trash) and recovery copies.

Without a vault password, the index .euphoric\notebook.json contains a full readable copy of every note, including Trash. Deleting a .md file doesn't delete the note.

If you change a note's text in another app while Kithnote is closed, Kithnote uses your change the next time it starts. If the file changes while Kithnote is open, Kithnote saves a copy of your changed file in .euphoric\recovered before writing its own version. Kithnote only reads notes it created: new .md files you add to the folder don't appear, so use Import notes for those. Changing the frontmatter doesn't rename or move a note.

If you turn on a vault password, Kithnote encrypts the notebook and then deletes the readable files. Deleting isn't secure erasure. If some files can't be removed (for example, one is open in another app), Settings shows Finish encryption cleanup. Old unencrypted copies can remain in backups or version history; if your Documents folder syncs to OneDrive, your readable notes are uploaded there.

Open Settings to find Open notebook folder and Move notebook folder…. Moving copies every file, checks each copy and only then switches. Your old folder stays where it is until you remove it.

Other app data (such as the saved folder location and update information) is in %APPDATA%\euphoric-notes.

The Windows app can hold up to 10,000 notes, including Trash. Saving a larger notebook fails.

Sync from Windows

Create your vault in the browser app, then paste the connection kit into Free sync in the Windows app. See Sync. The Windows app also shows Create my sync vault, but vaults can only be created in the browser. Leave Sync server as it is. The Windows app can't use Revoke old connection kits; do that in the browser app at kithnote.app/notes. Revoking doesn't change the encryption key (see Sync).

Uninstall

Remove Kithnote in Windows Settings, under installed apps. Uninstalling keeps your notebook (including readable notes) and profile data; delete those folders yourself to remove them.

Differences from the browser

  • Notes are saved as files, not in the browser's storage, so clearing browser data doesn't affect them.
  • Desktop updates and the notebook folder options appear only in the Windows app.
