Using Kithnote
Organizing
Folders, favorites, tags, search, backlinks, the graph and Trash.
The sidebar
The sidebar lists All notes, Favorites, Recent (notes edited in the last 7 days), Trash, your FOLDERS and your TAGS. Choose Collapse sidebar to shrink the sidebar to a narrow rail of icons (Search notes (Ctrl K), All notes, Favorites, Graph view (Ctrl G), Trash, Settings). The note list can collapse the same way with Collapse note list.
The note list next to it has a Filter notes… box, which narrows the current list by title and text, and a sort menu with Last edited (the default) and A to Z.
Folders
- Choose New folder under FOLDERS, give it a name and choose Create folder.
- To put a note in a folder, open the Note actions menu and choose Move to folder, then type a folder name and choose Move note. Typing a new name creates the folder.
- Right-click a folder, or open Folder actions while a folder is open, for New note here, Rename folder… and Delete folder….
- Renaming a folder to the name of an existing folder merges them.
- Deleting a folder moves its notes to Trash. Restoring a note brings its folder back.
Folders are one flat list. They can't be nested. When you import nested folders, each one becomes a single folder with a name such as Projects/Alpha.
Favorites
Choose the star on a note (Add to favorites or Remove from favorites) to list it under Favorites.
Tags
Add #tags anywhere in a note (see Writing). The TAGS section of the sidebar lists every tag (the number next to TAGS is how many tags you have), and choosing one lists its notes. Hover over a tag in Read mode to see how many notes use it and a few of their titles.
Search: Find a thought
Press Ctrl K (or Ctrl P), or choose Search anything, to open Find a thought. Type in Search across your notes… and use ↑, ↓ and Enter to open a result.
- Search covers the title and text of every note that isn't in Trash, ignoring capital letters.
- It looks for your exact words together, as typed. There are no operators such as AND, OR, quotes,
tag:orfolder:. - It shows the first 20 matches, each with a short excerpt and a preview. If nothing matches it says "No notes found. Try another word."
To search inside the note you have open, see Find in a note.
Connections and outline
The side panel on the right of an open note (use Hide connections or Show connections to toggle it) has two tabs.
Connections
- LINKED FROM HERE lists the notes this note links to.
- BACKLINKS lists the notes that link to this one, labelled "Thoughts that lead back here."
- Open local graph opens the graph around this note.
Outline
- IN THIS NOTE lists the note's
#,##and###headings. Choose one to jump to it in Read mode.
Graph view
Press Ctrl G or choose Graph view (Ctrl G) to see your notes as dots joined by their [[links]].
- Whole notebook shows everything. Around this note shows the notes linked to the open one, with a Depth of 1, 2 or 3 steps.
- Filters has a title filter (Filter by title), a folder menu (All folders) and checkboxes for Tags, Unwritten links and Unlinked notes. Folders get different colours. Links to notes that don't exist yet are shown as Not written yet.
- Forces adjusts how the graph spreads out, with a Reset forces button. Force settings stay on your device.
- Scroll to zoom, drag to move, click a dot to open the note, and Ctrl-click to open it and stay in the graph. You can also use +, -, 0 (fit to view) and the arrow keys. Esc closes the graph.
- Browse graph notes gives a list of the notes in the graph, which you can search.
Trash
Move to Trash (from Note actions or the right-click menu) doesn't delete a note. Open Trash to see DELETED NOTES. A note in Trash:
- shows "This note is in Trash." with a Restore note button, and can be restored from the right-click menu too;
- is read-only, and doesn't appear in All notes, Favorites, search, the graph or backlinks;
- still counts toward the 10,000-note sync limit;
- isn't included in Export notebook.
Trash has no permanent delete
There is no way to empty Trash or permanently delete a note in Kithnote. Trashed notes stay until you restore them. This includes the copy in your sync vault. Don't rely on Trash to remove sensitive text for good.
Other note actions
The Note actions menu also has Duplicate note (the copy is titled with " (copy)" added) and Export Markdown for one note. The right-click menu has Rename, which moves you to the title field.
