Use it in your browser

Go to kithnote.app and choose Open your notebook, or go straight to kithnote.app/notes. No account or install is needed. The first time you open the notebook, Kithnote creates it in your browser and fills it with a few sample notes.

The sample notes

The sample notebook has three folders: Getting started (with "A little space for big ideas", "Making connections" and "Your notes, everywhere"), Personal ("Idea garden", "Reading list") and Projects ("Kithnote"). They are ordinary notes. Edit them or move them to Trash whenever you like.

Where your notes live

In the browser, your notes are stored in that browser, on that device, for that website. Nothing is uploaded unless you set up sync.

Notes are saved automatically. The status bar shows Saving… and then Saved on this device. If something goes wrong it shows Could not save.

Only one tab can have your notebook open at a time. A second tab shows "Your notebook is already open in another tab. Close that tab, then try again here."

After the first online visit, the browser keeps a copy of the app, so you can keep writing without a connection.

Write your first note

Create a note

Choose New note (in the Windows app you can also press Ctrl N; in most browsers that shortcut opens a new browser window instead). In an empty notebook the button is Write a note.

Name it

The new note is called "Untitled" and its title is selected, so type a title straight away. A note opens in a folder if you were viewing one, otherwise in the folder Notes.

Write

New notes open in Write mode, where you type Markdown. Switch to Read to see it formatted, or Visual to edit it formatted. See Writing.

Connect it

Type [[ to link to another note, or #idea to add a tag.

Install the Windows beta

Kithnote also runs as a Windows app, which keeps your notes as Markdown files in a folder on your PC. Go to kithnote.app/download and choose Download Kithnote for Windows. The app is a Windows x64 beta. Windows may warn about an unknown publisher. See Windows app for the steps.

The browser notebook and the Windows notebook are separate until you connect them with sync. You can also move notes between them with import and export.

Next steps

  • Learn the editor in Writing.
  • Organize your notes in Organizing.
  • Use the notebook on more than one device with Sync.
