Your notes are Markdown, so you can bring them in from other apps and take a copy out at any time. Both live in Settings, under Your notebook.

Import

Choose Import notes ("Markdown files, folders, Obsidian vaults or ZIPs"). The Bring your notes along window offers three choices:

ChoiceUse it for
A folder or Obsidian vaultPick the vault folder. Subfolders become Kithnote folders. Only shown in browsers that can pick folders.
A ZIP archiveA zipped vault, or a Kithnote export.
Markdown filesOne or more .md files.

What to expect:

  • Only .md and .markdown files are imported. Images and other files aren't imported yet.
  • Settings folders such as .obsidian are ignored.
  • A note's title is its file name without .md. Its folder is the folder it was in, or Notes if it had none. If everything sits under one top folder, that folder's name is dropped.
  • [[links]] between imported notes keep working.
  • Frontmatter at the top of a file stays in the note as written.
  • Kithnote's own exports restore their titles, folders and favorites.

Kithnote tells you what it skipped:

  • files over 500 KB (500,000 bytes), "over the 500 KB note limit";
  • notes already in your notebook with the same folder, title and text, "already in your notebook";
  • other files, "N attachments (images and other files are not imported yet)";
  • anything that would take your notebook past 10,000 notes (Trash included), "past the 10,000-note limit".

A ZIP file can be at most 300 MB. If it is larger, import the vault folder instead.

Export

  • Export notebook ("All your notes as Markdown in a ZIP file") saves Kithnote YYYY-MM-DD.zip with one .md file per note, in a folder per Kithnote folder. A / in a folder name becomes -.
  • To export one note, choose Export Markdown in the Note actions menu.

Each file begins with frontmatter holding the note's ID, title, folder, favorite flag and creation date, followed by the note text. Importing the ZIP back restores the title, folder and favorite flag. The note gets a new ID and creation date.

If you turned on a vault password, the export button is labelled Export Markdown (decrypted), because the ZIP holds readable, unencrypted files. Keep it somewhere safe. That password also lets you save an encrypted backup instead (see the security page).

Export now and then. Notes in the browser are stored only in that browser, and an export is an independent copy.
